~The end of 2011

What a year this has been. I began documenting a blog on the birth of Matthew shortly after we got back from the hospital in April and wasn't able to finish until this evening. I still feel as though there was so much that I've left out from his delivery. Obviously, it would have been wonderful to have documented every single detail but my memory isn't that good. :(

The past year in a nut shell. Matthew was born April 14th, 2011. It was the BEST day of this entire year! This is something I've been looking forward to for 7 years or more. Finally finally finally, all those heartbreaking years paid off. Matthew is PERFECT!!!!! He's everything I wanted and more. I wanted a little one that resembled Tommy, had light eyes, and that I would have prior to turning 36. God granted me all 3 wishes and then some.

Matthew is such a sweet baby. He began smiling around 4 weeks. These weren't the gassy smiles, these were the real thing. I worked really really hard for those smiles. They certainly light up a room.

Shortly after bringing him home, we went to the beach for Tommy's spring break. I didn't do too much while down there but I did get around to dying Easter eggs and we took Tommy to the skate park.

The summer was really busy. My sister flew in with her 4 kiddos. They stayed from June until the end of August. I spent my entire summer w/ them. We went to Carowinds, Monkey Joes, the beach. I even went to the NKOTBSB concert w/ my sister on July 23rd.

School began in August for Tommy. I was ready to get on some sort of a schedule since the summer was so hectic. As much as I hate to admit it, I was ready for school to begin. I needed some time to work on a dedicated schedule for Matthew....bedtime, breakfast, bathtime...etc.

His bedtime has been around 10 every night. I crash about this time so I'm glad he's been sticking to it.

We began construction work in October that is still going on to this day. I'm so ready to get my house back in order. It's been messy and very time consuming. We had some wood replaced on our house, had the house painted, had our back sliding glass doors replaced as french doors, had the side and front doors both replaced. We've had indoor painting going on for weeks now. The painter pretty much set his own schedule since my hubby failed to put that in the contract. It's ok though, the painting is almost complete and looks really good. We got Tommy's room, bathroom, the Fourier (sp), and our bedroom and bathroom all painted. It looks so good. We've been cleaning out as we've been going along so I feel as though a huge weight is being lifted. We also got new comforter sets for both rooms along w/ new posturepedic mattresses. Ours even has the head and feet lift. So comfortable!

Other than the construction work, it's been a pretty busy past 8 months. I can't believe Christmas was here and gone already. I wasn't ready AT ALL. Makes me sad since Christmas is my favorite holiday of the entire year! Every year I see more and more people that don't celebrate which makes me so sad! I even thought about flying out to OR to spend it w/ my sister since she went all out. We made it happen but it wasn't easy. Santa is becoming harder and harder to do as Tommy gets older. He asks all the time if he's real and pays attention if a price tag was left on something. I suppose I'm just not ready to take that magic away. Even though he's almost 10, he's still my little boy. Santa has added magic to our Christmas every year since Tommy was born. I know we have Matthew now so we can still celebrate, but I will miss it when Tommy no longer believes.

As for where we are now....Matthew still isn't crawling that well. This is mainly my fault. I hold him A LOT!!!! Since having the construction, I didn't want him on the floors until they got a good cleaning, plus, we have hardwoods downstairs. What baby wants to learn to crawl on hardwoods? Recently, I began putting him in his pack and play w/ some of his toys. It has been wonderful to have my arms free even for just a meal. He plays pretty contently for a good bit. He is soooo close to crawling. I say this but he has taken a few crawling moves. He began scooting/crawling backwards which was so funny! Now he rocks and rocks and has lunged forward quite a bit. I've watched within the last week where he can go from laying down to a sitting position. He loves to sit and play w/ his toys but still looses his balance some and falls either sideways or face down. I always have him some kind of cushioning around so that he won't get hurt.

He babbles and laughs all the time. He can say mama and dada but we aren't sure if it isn't just him babbling or if he's really saying it. Either way, he grasps our attention immediately when he says either since we think it's so cute. He is still exclusively on breast milk. He has never had any formula in which I've made a great sacrifice to do for him. The first few months were horrible. I didn't enjoy it at all! Some moms do and yay for them but this wasn't something I thoroughly enjoyed. I felt like I was sitting constantly and didn't have a moment to myself, not to mention, he wasn't the best nurser. I would say around 4-6 months, it got much better. I wanted to stick it out no matter what and I'm so proud of myself for doing what I set my mind to. It takes great sacrifice to nurse a baby. Now I love it! It's much much easier and I enjoy that time w/ my sweet little boy. I find it to be much easier now than I ever thought it would be in the beginning.

As for food, he isn't interested. Milk is just perfectly fine with him. He just learned recently how to hold his bottle. Of course I have pumped more lately so I could get my Christmas shopping done and it's been WONDERFUL being about to go out and let him feed himself. People say snide remarks all the time about he should be eating or taking a sippy cup. It's irritating but obviously these are people that have probably never nursed and if they have, they have pumped and given the baby a bottle verses the breast and also probably started their baby on solids WAY before they needed to. I've read enough to know what is and isn't ok for MY baby. There is nothing wrong w/ him not eating right now even though I do try my best to introduce food to him on a regular basis.

He does like peas and mac and cheese. These are his favs so far. He had to get allergy tested since he had 3 episodes where he ate rice cereal and had projectile vomiting. He has FPIES (Food Protein Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome) and is unable to have rice until he's 3 and milk, soy, and wheat at a year old. We have an Epi pen in case he should have any food allergies.

So now that I've talked some about Matthew, now about Tommy. This has been a very challenging year for Tommy. I'm not sure if it's jealousy of Matthew or his age. A lot of parents w/ boys this age go through the same things we've went through. He's been so sassy and doesn't follow any rules or directions no matter what we do. This is something I'm not use to so it is breaking my heart. Tommy has always been such a sweet little boy and over the past couple of years, he's slowly made some personality changes which I've found very negative. I've even heard him say a couple of bad words in which he cried after since he knew better. He seemed to know some about the birds and the bees from his peers so I had the "talk" with him. It wasn't fun at all and all it does is make me more sad knowing that my little boy is growing up. I wasn't looking forward to the day when he was old enough to know what the birds and the bees are all about. I didn't give him too much info but enough to clear up the misconceptions he had from what his little friends have told him over the years. I still believe this is an area where his dad needs to step up and discuss with him. Very uncomfortable for me that's for sure.

We've had to talk w/ his pediatrician about some things going on with him that are out of the norm. I won't discuss here as I know he would rather I didn't. I've even had discussions with his teacher but his teacher doesn't see the things we do since Tommy is so well behaved at school. Math has been a HUGE headache this year. Tommy HATES math! He puts up an argument every single night which turns into Gabe and I arguing since Gabe doesn't have a clue how to help Tommy in a calm manner, instead they go back and forth every night which stresses me out. I don't like a bunch of negative energy or loud noises, makes me anxious so then I get upset. Needless to say, this has been a year I never saw coming.

I believe Tommy has been a great big brother to Matthew and is always so sweet to him then there was today. Tommy was sucking on Matthew's fingers and all of a sudden Matthew began crying out of nowhere. I wasn't sure what was going on since nothing was hurting him that I could see. I realized that Tommy let go of his fingers and I finally got it out of him that he was biting him. He wasn't biting him hard but babies are sensitive, anything like this is going to upset them. I was beside myself upset w/ Tommy so we took his computer away and he had to sit in his room by himself to think about what he had just done. I still trust Tommy even though some moms would think I'm crazy. Tommy felt horrible and said he was barely biting down which I believe since there were no marks or indications that he was even biting him. Tommy loves Matthew but I will be on the watch for anymore behavior such as this. Tommy is STILL my child and I love him more than words could ever describe. I hope that 2012 will bring us a positive change. :)

I'm sure I could go on and on but I've got a baby to feed.

Happy New Years!!!!!

~Many Exciting Changes~

I can't believe it's been since December since I last entered a post! Time just seems to slip away so fast. I've barely even had a moment to myself since Matthew's Grand Debut on April 14, 2011! I wanted to post about my pregnancy before all slips my mind. My cravings were fruit, fruit and more fruit! I didn't eat that much during my pregnancy and only gained 6 lbs. I took Heparin injections through my 36th week and I would get sick just about every single time I would brush my teeth. I also couldn't stand the sight of meat at all! It would turn my stomach. Around the last few weeks of my pregnancy, I was very uncomfortable. I couldn't get into a good sleep position and wanted to lay more on my right side vs. my left which is suppose to be better for the baby. Most of the time I woke up flat on my back which they don't recommend but how am I suppose to know which way I'm turning when I'm sleeping? Ha!

Throughout the last 3 weeks of my pregnancy I went in for a procedure to see if it would help induce labor. I saw Lindsay first and she about killed me! I was crawling up the table she hurt me so bad. (I was 1 cm dilated) It didn't do any good that day, then the next week I saw Jan. She didn't hurt me as bad and then after that, I lost the mucus plug. I know TMI but I don't have time to write all this so I'm typing it so I don't forget. :) That was crazy BTW! Scared me at first since I didn't experience that w/ Tommy. Then, on the 3rd week I had an appointment w/ Kathy. When I went in, they said she was in labor and delivery! I was soooo upset that I just began to cry right there. I intentionally scheduled an appointment w/ Kathy since she had done the same procedure and I had Tommy that very next day. I actually scheduled my appointment w/ Kathy at 40 weeks and 1 day instead of whomever was working when I was exactly 40 weeks. They said that Hallie was working and I could see her. I have a great relationship w/ Hallie so I figured that would be ok. (Hallie delivered Tommy).

We get in to see Hallie and she performed the same procedure except would allow me to take a break and then began again. She was very gentle...thank goodness. She scheduled me for an induction the next morning, April 14th at 8:00 am. Once we left, Gabe and I grabbed lunch at Panera near the Arboretum. I was in pain every since I left the Dr.'s office. I took several warm baths that afternoon but nothing took the edge off. I had Braxton Hicks throughout my pregnancy so I thought for sure this is what I was having. Later on, I could tell they were getting stronger so I began keeping track of them. They were between 5 and 6 minutes apart. I called my OB and luckily Kathy was still on call at the hospital. She recommended taking Tylenol PM and another warm bath to see if that worked, if not to call back because I was in labor! The T. PM didn't take the edge off and neither did the bath. I curled up in Tommy's bed (it's the coolest room in the house and I love his fan) in hopes that the pain would wind down. I surely didn't want to be that couple going in during the middle of the night to deliver our baby. :)

Around 11:30 PM (April 13th) I called Kathy back and she said to come on in, I was in TRUE LABOR! I was so excited but very nervous! We picked my mom up on the way to the hospital so I would say I checked in around midnight. They had my room all ready for me so we didn't have to go through the checking in process. They hooked up the monitors and sure enough, I was in labor. I was around 6 cm dilated when I went in. They had to keep adjusting my position since Matthew's BP kept changing/dropping. I ended up getting an epidural since I was in so much pain. It didn't numb me completely, I could still feel some of my left side but it wasn't that bad. Once they gave me the epidural, I fell asleep for a little nap. Gabe, Tommy and my mom were all in the room during this time and everyone was getting in some sleep before delivery. Kathy came in to check on me around 3-4 am April 14th. She said I was still around 6-7 cm. To back up, they had to get an IV team in there to give me an IV since I have such tiny veins. I still have the scar 3 months later! (the worse part of delivering is that damn IV!)

Around 6:30-6:45am Kathy came in and said I was ready to push and said she would be back in just a few minutes. A few minutes turned into more like 30 ha. I began pushing laying on my back. Matthew's BP must have still been fluctuating so I laid on my side. Kathy put an oxygen mask over my face and Gabe began to get worried. He asked was everything ok and she said it was just a good idea to get more oxygen to Matthew and that she wasn't worried, if she begins to worry, then he can but otherwise everything was going great. I pushed for a good 20 minutes and there came my BEAUTIFUL baby boy! He was born at 7:53 am. He was so alert and looking around the entire room. As they weighed him, all I could hear was 6 lbs so I kept asking was he only 6lbs..lol..He was 6lbs 14oz. I couldn't believe how little he was! Just a baby peanut! I was hoping Tommy would cut the umbilical cord but he was embarrassed. :(

We then were moved to another room. My mom stayed w/ us about all day. Later that evening, Gabe took Tommy to stay w/ my mom for the night so he could make his spring party that Friday. I ended up having a moment where I just cried and cried missing Tommy. When Gabe got back to the room he said Tommy had cried. Tommy and I are so close that it's almost like we felt the exact same way. I called him at my mom's and we both cried a little more but I surely didn't want him to miss his spring party and after all, Gabe was going to the party to surprise Tommy!

The first night in our room, I didn't want to sleep a wink. I just wanted to stare at my perfect little angel. He was precious!!!!!! Every single thing about him was perfect! He slept so well but all I could do is either hold him or stare at him about all night long. The next morning, Gabe headed off to Tommy's party and I had some time for just me and Matthew. I cried some more missing Tommy even though I knew he was coming back to the hospital after his party was over. I'm hardly ever away from Tommy and he's been my only child for 9 years so it was a little sad not having him there the entire time. This was the busiest day, we had a revolving door. This is the day that the Dr.'s bug you every 5 minutes and I was having to do paper work. We had a specialist come in to do Matthew's circumcision, however, he wasn't able to do it at the time for reasons I won't discuss, however, he will be getting it done in October. We had quiet time from 2-4 where no one could come in the room unless we let them. That was a nice little break from everything.

Once Tommy got back to the hospital, we took him to get some blood work. His Dr. wanted him to get some done and we decided to use the lab at the hospital since we were already there. Gabe asked the nurse if I could go or did I have to stay in my bed. I remember laughing SO hard at him asking that. Was too funny. So we took Tommy to Levine's and Tommy cried and cried. I had to walk out of the room because it was upsetting me. Eventually they were able to draw the blood and we went back up to the room w/ an icecream stop on the way.

Once in the room, we just hung out and played w/ Matthew. Tommy really enjoyed holding his new baby brother. I got lots of pictures but unfortunately, we hardly got any video footage which I'm really sad about. I believe I have maybe 20 seconds of Matthew right after he was born. Breaks my heart since these are times you never get back. If it wasn't for me, we'd never have any pics or videos of our children. :(

At one point when the nurse was in the room helping me nurse Matthew, a couple of women came rushing in checking Matthew's ankle tag and my wrist tag. I was like, what's going on? Matthew took his big toe from his foot and was playing w/ the ankle bracelet on the other foot which set off an alarm. It scared me at first but I was thankful that the security is so tight on the babies. I would hear the alarm go off every single night and didn't like it when Matthew was in the nursery when it would go off so I would call them and have them bring him to the room.

One of the nights we were there, Matthew was in the nursery and the alarm went off. I called down to the nursery to have them bring him to the room and I could hear..click click click click...I knew Matthew was on his way down. His little bed made the worst racket but it didn't phase him, he slept right through it.

We didn't have very many visitors which I really liked since I really needed that time to enjoy it with my new family of 4. It was extremely hard to sleep in the hospital because all I wanted to do was stare at my perfect baby.
